Spectrum Noir Hair & Skin chart and tutorial

Afternoon everyone, I hope you are all having a lovely day ?
I recently received a lovely email asking me if I would mind going through a basic Skin & Hair tutorial for Spectrum Noir pens, so here it is 🙂
Before i get started I just wanted to give anyone starting out with Alcohol markers some tips
  • Use a decent card/paper…i cannot emphasis this enough, if you try to use copy paper or an uncoated paper you will end up with lots of bleeding…and well… a general mess! I use Crafters Companion Neenah card and it works perfectly for me.
  • Always keep a scrap piece of your marker card next to you, I use this to test out colour combos, it saves wasting an image.
  • Work in good lighting, I use a Daylight lamp and it really does make a difference. Not only will it show your colours “true” but I have also found that I no longer get headaches !
  • Practice really does make perfect, don’t be scared to play around with colours and techniques…but learn the basics first.
I think one of the most common questions with regards to alcohol markers is what colours do I use for Skin Tones & Hair? The possibilities really are endless, but start simple and then once you have more confidence move onto your harder and more dramatic colours.
Here is my basic skin combo which works well with most hair colours.
With regards to everything but hair I ALWAYS lay a rough layer of the lightest colour, this does not have to be even, at the moment it acts just as a base. I have laid down a base of FS5.
Then whilst your base layer is still wet go in and add your darkest colour..in this case FS9, think about where the darkest area will be, because of the sweep of the hair there would be a shadow, so I have added mine there.
Now take your medium colour FS4, what you need to do is blend the area between the light and dark, so work in tiny circles (or some people find it easier to use a gentle flicking motion) work along the edge where the dark meets the light colour. Now i bet you are thinking “this doesn’t look right”…DON’T PANIC.
Take your lightest colour again and repeat the previous blending, but this time blend the medium colour into the lightest colour.
I now go back in whilst he layers are still damp and add my cheek colour (FS8 in this case), and I also add a shadow line.

Now if you are feeling confident and own the fab new Spectrum Noir pencils you can add even more depth by taking 119 and taking it along where you want your shadow area, I then go in and blend with 117 & 112.
And there is your basic skin tone.
Now onto a nice easy hair combo. Now with hair I work in a different way, because hair has texture and i like it look like it has different strands and colours. Also with hair I tend to only do one area at a time….if there is a lot of hair with different layers I tend to break it down into 4-6 areas, but with this image two is fine.
So i always start with my darkest colour first (TN2)….with hair I tend to hold the tip near the darkest area and flick out towards the lightest area.
Then take your medium colour (EB1) and flick over the top of the dark colours, but this time you want to do longer flicks so they go more into the lighter area.
Now take your lightest colour and colour all your white area going lightly over the already coloured areas.
I then go back in with my darkest colours and repeat the first 2 steps.
Repeat the process on the rest of the hair, and there you have a nice simple hair combo.

I hope you have enjoyed me sharing this with you, I will be back tomorrow with a more advanced hair technique where I will show you how to achieve a nice hair combo using Tip to Tip technique.
I have also done a colour reference chart below showing some of my most used Skin and Hair colours, please feel free to pin it, but please note it is for reference only and not to be used for anything else.
Thank you to Wendy at All Dressed up for allowing me to use one of her images from her Digital Image Three Little Party Girls

Globecraft & Piccolo Ruby red earrings

Morning everyone, it is Tuesday which means it is my turn to show you what I have been creating for Globecraft & Piccolo
One of my favorite sets Is
It is such a versatile set, and I do love those bows !
I am not a jewelry maker…in fact I have never made any, but to me those bows are screaming out to be made into earrings.
I had some old broken up earrings and decided to use a little gem spacer with these.
What do you think…
I instantly knew I had to use Ruby red slippers embossing enamel powder, and i am so glad I was right.
This was such a simple and fun project and ideal if you are looking for some different earrings….and with all the different colours of embossing enamel just think how many different pairs you could have !
Items used-
Upcycled Gem spacers
Don’t forget to head on over to the blog to see the rest of the teams beautiful projects.

Visible Image, Molly

Morning everyone, where did the week go !!
This is one of two posts from me this morning, Please check out the other post for details on the new challenge from Visible image
I have been creating with the fab Molly Rules set this week…what do you think….
She is so much fun ! As always she has been coloured using my Spectrum Noirs.
I went around Molly using Pickled Raspberry Distress ink and then sprinkled round some Vintage black embossing enamel and heat set.
I made a step card and then using Pickled Raspberry Distress stain I coloured some Neenah card and then stamped using the Heart & Skull from the Molly Rules set
I then cut a strip of black card for along the front step and stamped the barbed wire from the set and heat set with clear embossing powder.
I took some tulle and made a bow and then stamped one of the skulls onto some pink card and cut it out, i then stuck this into the centre of the bow. The sentiment was then stamped onto some pink card .
I love how funky this card is, so much fun to create.

Globecraft & Piccolo Canvas

Morning everyone, it is Tuesday which means some Globecraft & Piccolo inspiration from me.
I have been creating with some of the new release this week, and have created a mini canvas.
This was so fun to do. I coloured the canvas using Distress inks and then stamped along the bottom using Tall Grassy Flowers Stamp, i then dabbed adhesive fluid across the grasses and sprinkled a mix of Mermaid Tears Embossing enamel & Aged White across and heat set, I then took two of the new 3D Enamel Gels  and randomly dotted them to give them the look of flowers.
The birds are from the Lil flowers, Leaves, Birds & Bows set and I have given them two coatings of UTEE in White and then rubbed some gold wax over them.
The sun is from one of the new Piccolo Sets, Spring Accents, I did something slightly different with the sun.I cut it so it would fit in the corner  & then used my black Spectrum Noir and Coloured it so it was all black (including the edges), I then gave it a thin layer of 3D Enamel Gel In Daffodil Pearl, whilst it was still wet I sprinkled some Aged White over it and heat set, I then took the 3D Enamel Gel In Daffodil Pearl and put another layer on and waited 5-10 mins before wiping some of the gel away…I really love effect this has given and will certainly be using it more in the future.
I hope you like my mini canvas, don’t forget to check back each day for some wonderful creations from the rest of the fab team.

Sheena Douglass CAS

Morning everyone, I hope you all had a lovely weekend with lots of crafting 🙂
Over at Crafters Companion Blog they are having a Clean and Simple Challenge, I thought some of the Sheena stamps I had would be perfect…What do you think…
I made a 6×4 card blank and then cut a smaller piece of Watercolour card, I coloured it by taking Distress inks (colours are listed below) and pressing them down onto my craft sheet, I then gave them a spritz of water and pushed the watercolour card down onto it, the thing i love about this technique is you can get some many different effects by just playing around with the distress inks whilst on the craft mat.
Once Dry I used Sheena’s A little bit sketchy Falling Feathers set and did some second generation stamping using Versafine ink pad.
I then stamped the sentiment (again second generation) and mounted the sentiment and the stamped panel onto some black cardstock, and then stuck them onto the card.
I do hope you like my card, I really enjoyed making it.
Items used-
6×4 card blank
Ranger Distress Inks in –
Broken China
Squeezed Lemonade
Mowed Lawn
Water Spritzer
Black Card Stock in my stash
Black Versafine Ink Pad
Craft Sheet

Globecraft & Piccolo Bubble frame

Morning everyone, it is Tuesday, which means Globecraft & Piccolo day from me
Have you been and checked out the new Spring release ? there is some fantastic items in the release, so if you haven’t checked it out, then what you waiting for !
Onto what I have been creating this week.
I have used one of the fab Bubble Frame kits, the one I have used is the new French Oval Kit, and it is beautiful !
I wanted to go with a vintage/shabby style with it…
What do you think ? I was really happy with how it turned out.
On the actual frame I have painted it with Off white paint, and then used a Crackle glaze, once dry I used Distress stain, which i rubbed all over and then buffed off.
The edges of the frame and French oval I rubbed some gold wax.
Inside the Bubble I have used the new Stacey’s stacking flowers, which are brilliant and so versatile ! I used Aged White Embossing Enamel & Copper Kettle Embossing Enamel on the flowers and trimmed them so they sat around the edge of the frame, I also “lifted” some of the petals to give some dimension to them.
I have also used one of the butterflies from the Butterfly Accents set and one of the flourishes from Medium Flourish Accents set, i embossed these using Bahama Aqua Embossing Enamel
Here is a closer look at the butterfly…
You can also see the crackle and the beautiful frame better in this picture.
I hope you like what I have been creating this week, don’t forget to check back everyday and see what the rest of the team have been creating, and why not head on over to our Facebook page and share what you have been creating too.
Happy crafting.

Now those who are on my Facebook page would have seen me saying how fantastic the new Spectrum Noir pencils are…I truly love am in love with these pencils !!
Spectrum noir challenge  is currently Masculine, so I decided to to make a card and enter…and here it is…
I have used the image Dare from Mo Manning, the sentiment also comes with the image, I decided to go for a travel feel to the card…and of course had to be vintage !

Here is a closer look at Dare…I have used the pencils to give definition on this image and I cannot believe how fantastic they blend….I have not even used blending solution ! I really think these will take your colouring to another level and cannot recommend them enough…I was very silly and only got the Essentials set, but I will be purchasing the other sets.
