Hey lovelies, I hope you are all having a great week ?
It’s time for another Simon Saturday, and for this post I am going to show you a Sympathy card I created using non sympathy stamp sets.
I asked a while back what would people like to see me create here on my blog and a couple of people said they really struggle with sympathy cards, I think the truth is it’s something no one likes creating a card for, I for one don’t own any stamp sets that are for that type of card so wanted to show what you can create using stamps that you may have in your stash.
The main thing i try and do with this type of card is keep it simple. I also find a simple sentiment such as Thinking Of You is more than enough and can often make someone smile and let them know they are in your thoughts.
I also try and add a “happy” colour, in this card I went with yellow because I want to try and make people smile or have hope at a time when they are experiencing sadness and colour can be a great way of doing this.
For this card I have used Simon’s More Spring flowers stamp set (all items used are linked below) for the main image, I coloured the rose thinking along the lines of a white rose and liked how it looked against the yellow background. I stamped the image using Simon’s Barely Beige Ink for a “no line” feel and coloured it using Polychromo Pencils.
To create the background I masked off the image after stamping using Pebeo Drawing Gum and used Distress Oxide ink in Squeezed Lemonade along with Clarity Stencil brush. To get the colour soft and light i inked the brush up and them rubbed most of the colour off onto a microfibre cloth, I find doing this allows you to slowly build the colour up rather than starting with a lot of ink on the paper you then have to blend out.
Once I had finished colouring the rose I added the Thinking Of You sentiment from Simon’s Hydrangea Blooms stamp set to the bottom right hand corner of the piece.
I trimmed the sides of the card down and adhered to an a2 note card i created using Simons Smoke Grey card.
My tips about creating this sort of card are –
- Try to keep the design simple.
- Add a splash of colour somewhere, the point of the card is to not only let someone know you are thinking of them, but also to try and bring some happiness to an otherwise sad time, don’t be scared to add color.
- Think about the sentiment, if you are unsure what to use do as I have and use a Thinking of You sentiment, other ones which work well are: Sending love, From Our Family To Yours & Here for You.
Most of all remember that the person you are sending the card to will be happy to know that you have thought of them, so don’t worry or stress over the design, the thought really is what counts, especially in circumstances such as this.
I know this is a card a lot of people struggle to create so hopefully this has helped a little bit.

As we ( the family) are currently going through the awful situation of loosing a mother, we have received various sympathy cards and most are along the lines of the hints and tips you have given to us crafter’s. Your card is beautiful and would defiantly bring a smile to the faces of those left behind during this time.x
